SoftBank Invests Up to $40 Billion More in OpenAI, Citing Artificial Super Intelligence Goal

Tokyo, Japan – SoftBank Group Corp. has finalized a definitive agreement with OpenAI for follow-on investments totaling up to USD 40.0 billion. SoftBank's effective investment amount is expected to be up to USD 30.0 billion after syndication to co-investors.

The Japanese conglomerate views artificial intelligence as the next critical phase of the "Information Revolution" and has stated its mission to realize Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI) for the advancement of humanity. SoftBank has positioned OpenAI as its most important partner in achieving Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), considered a key milestone on the path to ASI.

This significant investment aims to support OpenAI's continued growth and is explicitly linked to the "Stargate Project." Announced in collaboration with OpenAI, the Stargate Project involves building dedicated, large-scale AI infrastructure in the United States.

SoftBank stated that the investment will be classified as financial assets measured at fair value through profit or loss in its consolidated financial statements, reflecting its strategic importance.
